Beeswax Wraps

In the last few weeks we have made our own

to use in our lunchboxes.

In class we have been learning about how to reduce waste as a way to prevent damage to the environment. 

Did you know that beeswax wraps are reusable, washable and they are a sustainable alternative to cling wrap or ziplock bags. Beeswax also has natural antibacterial and antifungal properties that help keep food fresh.

Year 2 has made this wrap using 100% cotton, pure beeswax, pine rosin and jojoba oil. It’s great for wrapping breads, fruits, vegetables and cheeses but not suitable for meats and liquids. 

To keep it clean just wash it in cold water with mild soap and a sponge. The wax may melt in warm water. If the wrap starts to look a bit worn out  (in around 6-12 months) just pop me in the oven at 200 degrees and the wax will melt and recover the cotton to be used again or you can add some more beeswax if it there is no longer enough to cover the fabric.

Machine Makers!

This week year 2 began their marvellous new Science inquiry called, Machine Makers!

Based on the idea of a Rube Goldberg Machine we attempted to make the Dog Feeder machine as pictured above. We learnt from our unsuccessful attempts and made many modifications.

 

 

One day we may be create our own machine. View "Princess Machine"then comment what type of machine you could invent and how would it make your life easier. 

Growing Grass Heads

Our grass heads have changed over the last month, some more than others. Below are some of our thoughts about the grass heads.

The grass heads were first just and cup and then a sock. We put some seeds and potting mix in. We had to let it grow for about two weeks before we started to see the grass. Skyla

They started off as little seeds, as they days have gone by the grass has gotten longer and longer. Now they are ginormous. Caitlin

Looming Landmarks

On Monday Year 2 headed off on an exciting tour exploring the landmarks of Canberra. First we headed to Mount Ainslie where we labelled the different landmarks we could see.

We headed to Old Parliament House and ate in the Senate Gardens. We even managed to have a huge game of Everyones In on the cricket oval. After we walked to the Foundation Stone which marks where our beautiful city started to be constructed.

The highlight of the day was the boat tour.

Some of us even managed to steer the boat. Luckily we managed not to collide with anyone else.

A flying start to the term...

Yesterday the sky was dark and threatening as the teachers set up for the cross country.

Luckily the skies cleared and we were able to race. We are so proud of everyone doing their best!

Then this morning we had The Ridiculous Rhyme Show.

Tomorrow we will have a special breakfast to celebrate Mother's Day. The hall is filled with amazing art and has been decorated for the occasion.

Mini Investigation

Yesterday we started a mini investigation. We viewed some information about a world wide problem of litter ending up in the world's oceans.

Students then discussed if this is a problem at Fraser. We collected some data from our classmates on their thoughts.

 

The Turtles went out to have a look to see if there was much litter after lunch play time. Look at how much litter we collected and we have only been back at school for two days.

Athletics Carnival

It was a fabulous day yesterday as the whole school attended the Athletics Carnival at Charnwood oval. The children turning 8 competed in discus, long jump, shot put as well as running races. Luckily there was even time in there to play a few games. The 7 year olds participated in a range of activities including an obstacle course, long jump, rob the nest and shot put. We also ran in a race!
